Topcats, the indisputable leaders of the pack with a hat trick of wins at Spa!

Nobody could argue with who really came out on top at Spa, Belgium on Sunday after the team’s fivebest performance so far.

Blessed by fine weather, all six drivers could focus on pushing hard against the competition, allowing them to make the most of a dry track and impervious cars that would see them to the end of the race.

Henry Fletcher and Raphael Fiorentino ‘s comeback to the team and Britcar was nothing short of spectacular as they stood in for Kyle Tilley and Sam Head for the Spa round in the Class 2 Marcos.

Championship challenger,  Owen O’Neill shared the driving duties with fouranother of the team’s regulars, hot shoe,  Neil Huggins in the Class 3 Marcos. Most were surprised to see the Mick Mercer/Gary Smith duo in their ‘good as new’ Ginetta G50 having suffered a huge crash at Thruxton only two weeks before.

Qualifying positions reflected little of what could be expected during the race with Fiorentino/Fletcher slotting in on the grid in 9th, O’Neill/Huggins in 12th and Mercer/Smith in 16th.

Some tenacious driving from Fiorentino saw him move up rapidly through the ranks to take 2nd place from the Cintrano/Morcillo Mosler in the opening laps.

Huggins did the lion’s share of the driving having started the race and he too was pushing hard to secure a class win.

Mercer and Smith in their Ginetta G50 weren’t to be outdone either as they onekept within striking distance of the leading Class 1 Production car, the Clarke Gibson BMW and pushed them hard. They didn’t have to take any risky chances in a battle with lead car in the end though as it retired with diff failure and Mercer/Smith were ready and waiting to snatch the lead and from there the class victory at the flag.

Faultless and committed performances from all six drivers, smart tactics, drama-free pit stops and bulletproof cars culminated in a stellar day for the Topcats Racing team. Outwitting and outdriving the likes of the Vipers, Ferraris and Moslers that should otherwise have had the pace to beat them to claim victories in Class 2, 3 and Production Class 1, 2nd overall with the Class 2 Marcos and all the cars inside the top ten could not have been a better present for team principal, Warren Gilbert, who was celebrating his Birthday that day.

The next round is at Castle Combe on 23-24th July.  We hope to see you there
