So, just how difficult is it to go Racing in a tvr? Well the answer is nowhere near as difficult as it used to be! I first started watched the tvr Tuscan Challenge in 1989 when I first go into tvrs in general. Back then the Challenge was a phenomenon, the pinnacle of the single make series with packed grids of top drivers and cars with huge talent and even bigger budgets! This was serious stuff, with the Factory, Dealerships and very wealthy individuals spending massive amounts of time and money on racing. But when the Factory pulled the Series, where did this leave tvr racing?
The tvr Car Club sponsored the Tasmin Challenge as a “Grass roots” entry into Motorsport for tvr fans. Very successful over a couple of years, the Tasmins were a breeding ground for those who still wanted to Race their tvrs but didn’t have the huge financial backing required to race in other series, and in any case…they wanted to race tvrs!
So, we have some Tuscan and Tasmin racers who want to race. Several owners who want to race their RV8 and SP6 cars and now we also have the GTF cars with coming Chevy lumps, so you can see, tvr racing is seriously on the way back. But how do you do it? What do you need? Will I have to re-mortgage my house? Hopefully we’ll have a few questions answered here as I am going through this process as I write this. My track based “monster Griff is currently being prepared. So what’s involved?
Challenge requirements.
1, ARDS “National B” Race licence.
2, Clothing, Overalls, Gloves, Boots and Helmet with correct approvals are mandatory.
3, A tvr. A tvr, to MSA Regs. With Roll cage, Fire system, Race Seat and Dunlop Tyres.
That’s it. With a fairly modest budget, you could be racing this season.
£400 could see you through your Licence.
£600 will obtain appropriate Clothing.
£3000 could find you a tvr Tasmin to kick off your first season.
£2000 could cover a few races in fuel, accommodation, entry fees etc.
£6K could get you started.
Ofcourse, if you have a few more quid
£2500 for Silverstone’s Race Academy
£5000 for the flashest and best Clothing/Helmet
£60,000 for the fastest race prepared GTF.
£10,000 for Full seasons race support with a major team.
£73,000 for a front running, competitive car going for the Group A Title.
And all in between obviously! Just get out there…or come along and find out what all the fuss is about.
