Located deep in the hills of the Ardenne, Spa is truly one of the all time great tracks. Created in 1924 for road racing, it's 8.8 miles which was originally very similar to the infamous Nurburgring in Germany (only a short drive away). Starting from the old pits, you plunged downhill, straight into the awesome Eau Rouge, then after Radillon, the original road circuit used to disappear left into the trees, and I mean into the trees! The original road circuits of the day were merely that. Roads cordoned off for the duration of the race with lamp posts, trees, road signs and rocks still exposed! Racers were very brave indeed in those days.on average, a driver died at every other GP!
Fortunately, nowadays the circuit has large run off areas of hi-grip tarmac, gravel traps and wide corners, but its still awesome! The very best of the current GPs.
On a Trackday you start from the new (upper) pits and feed in at the exit of the La Source hairpin for the plunge downhill to the fabulous Eau Rouge. You'll have to lift in your tvr or else you will run off as you climb out of the valley at Radillon, and that is VERY bad so keep your eyes on the top of the hill! A slight right hander at Kemmel leads you straight up the hillside accelerating hard all the way, we can hit an indicated 160 mph here in the Monster Griff! Breaking hard into Les Combes where a 90 degree right-left-right takes you over the brow of the hill to Rivage. 180 degrees double apex takes you for a short squirt to another 90 left and its down to Pouhon. This is a real test of your handling as you are dropping down the valley at quite a rate allowing you to gain speed very quickly but making it very difficult to lose that speed. You arrive at Pouhon very fast and the corner seems huge, but it keeps tightening and develops negative camber pushing you further and further out. Don't lift or you'll be off (but don't panic...there's hi-grip tarmac). Another quick squirt and soon you're at Fagnes. Another right and left combination then into the tight right hander at Stavelot. This 180 degrees takes you onto the long Blanchimont section. Again the late apex tempts you in fast only to push you wide on a tightening left hander at 100 mph or there abouts! Next it's the Bus stop. Recently reprofiled it's not as brutal as it used to be, but it is still and awesome left right combination where you have to lose around 60 mph quickly and get back on the gas as soon as possible as you hurl down the walled start/finish straight. Finally your are at the La Source hairpin, scene of the infamous 13 car pile up in 1998 F1 GP. Accelerating hard on the exit you are back on the old pit straight and have just completed your first lap of Spa, but there no time to congratulate yourself.Eau rouge is approaching fast!
Fantastic!
